Sesame Prawn Toast

Crunch into the crisp bread base, and savour the succulent prawn topping of this classic Chinese starter. The combo of minced prawns with a hint of chilli and bread works splendidly well. All in the comfort of your home in 30 minutes. How's that as an alternative to takeaway?

Healthy Hints

These toasts are dense in calories and fat. One toast provides approximately 350 Calories and 25 grams of fat. This leaves you with little room for a hearty main course, so portion wisely. Although traditionally, these are deep fried in oil, why not consider baking or grilling them to reduce the calories and fat. Not a fan of white bread? These toasts are just as delectable on whole grain bread; boosting your intake of fibre.


  • 250 g prawns (9 oz), cooked and peeled

    1 egg white

    ½ tsp green chillies, crushed (optional)

    38 g (1.3 oz) sesame seeds

    4 white sliced bread, thick sliced crust removed

    110 ml (3.9 fl oz) sunflower oil 


Cooking Guide

1. Blend the prawns and egg white into a smooth paste and transfer the mixture into a bowl.

2. Add the chillies and mix thoroughly.

3. Spread the prawn paste onto one side of each of the bread slices.

4. Spread the sesame seeds evenly onto a plate and then press the bread — prawn side down — onto to the sesame seeds so that they become embedded into the prawn paste.

5. Heat some of the oil in a frying pan on a medium heat and fry the bread slices — prawn side down — until golden brown.

6. Turnover and fry on the other side until golden brown.

7. Remove and place on to kitchen paper to absorb any excess oil.

8. Cut the slices into triangles and serve immediately.
